The diverse sounds of Alborosie
Italian-born singjay Alborosie’s debut album Soul Pirate is little more than a mash-up of previous reggae tunes and is quite epigonic in parts.
It’s a little extreme, however, to classify the album as poor. The 15-track album released earlier this month is typical of the kind of reggae Europeans would gravitate towards; perhaps the kind the artiste, born Alberto D’Ascola, weaned himself on as a teenager.
The intro, which has a forthright Rodigan declaring “music knows no boundaries, musical is universal” informs of Alborosie’s own influences and is an apt segue to raspy tremolos of Diversity. The track is easy and mellow with a kind of Jah Cure-meets-Beres Hammond appeal.
